Someone added you as one of their people
Still Kicking is a check-in app for people who live alone. They check in on a schedule they choose, usually once a day, to say they're okay. If they miss a check-in, and the grace time they chose passes, we email the people they picked, asking them to check on them.
There's nothing for you to install or sign up for.
What you might get
An alert, only if they miss a check-in. It says when they last checked in, when it was due, and what to do. Every alert uses the same wording; only the names and times change.
An all-clear, if they check in within 24 hours of an alert, so you know they've checked in.
A test, if they want to show you how it works. It starts with TEST and needs nothing from you.
They come from alerts@mail.stillkicking.app, with their name on them. Saving that address in your contacts helps keep them out of spam. If one lands in spam, junk or Promotions, please move it to your inbox so a real alert reaches you.
Every one ends with a link you can use to stop them.
If you get an alert
- Call or message them.
- No answer? Visit, or ask someone nearby to knock.
- If you think they're hurt or in danger, call local emergency services. In Ireland and across the EU, that's 112.
It could be nothing, like a flat phone. Replying to the email doesn't reach them, so contact them directly.
Still Kicking isn't an emergency service and doesn't contact anyone else for them.
Your details
The person who added you gave us your name and email address, so we can send these emails. Nothing else about you is collected, the emails carry no tracking, and you're never added to a mailing list.
- Their phone
- Keeps your name and address until they remove you.
- Our email service
- Resend sends from the EU and stores its data in the US. It keeps each alert queued for you, including the ones a later check-in cancelled, for up to 30 days, and records whether each email was delivered, bounced or marked as spam. Transfers to Resend are covered by the EU-US Data Privacy Framework and standard contractual clauses.
- Our server
- Runs on Google Cloud in Belgium. To stop anyone using Still Kicking to flood an inbox, no address gets more than 6 of these in 24 hours: test alerts, a phone's first alert, and alerts queued after an earlier one already went out. When one of those is sent to you, the server keeps a scrambled code made from your address, which can't be turned back into it, with the times of those emails, and deletes it within about 48 hours of the last one. Ordinary check-ins create nothing, so usually there's no code at all. If you ask us to stop emailing you, it keeps a different scrambled code made from your address, on its own, for as long as you want the emails stopped (see below). It never stores your address, your name or who added you.
We use your details on the basis of legitimate interests: theirs and yours in your being told if something may be wrong, and ours in keeping the service from being misused.
You can ask what we hold about you, and ask us to correct it, delete it or restrict how we use it, by writing to privacy@stillkicking.app. We'll answer within one month. You can also complain to a data protection authority, such as Ireland's Data Protection Commission.
Don't want these emails?
You have the right to object, and you don't need to give a reason. Every email from us ends with a link to stop them. It opens a page with a Stop these emails button; nothing changes until you press it. Or write to privacy@stillkicking.app from the address you want stopped, and we'll do it for you.
From then on we send that address no alerts, tests or all-clears, from anyone who uses Still Kicking. The person who added you sees in their app that you've asked us to stop, and we ask them to choose someone else.
One already-queued alert may still arrive. An alert waits with our email service until the next check-in replaces it, and we can't find it by your address. So if they miss a check-in before their app next connects, that one alert can still reach you; it means what it says. We won't send an all-clear after it.
To remember not to email you, we keep a scrambled code made from your address (it can't be turned back into it) and nothing else, until you ask us to undo it. To get the emails again, write to support@stillkicking.app from that address.
You can also simply tell the person who added you, and they can remove you in the app.
Still Kicking is run by Ahmed Bassiouny, who decides how your details are used (the controller). Write to privacy@stillkicking.app about your details, or support@stillkicking.app about anything else. The full details are in our privacy policy.
